I'm thrilled to share some exciting news: my team recently secured the third prize at a prestigious national competition - Designing Actionable Solutions for a Secure Homeland 2025 (DASSH) organized by the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS), along with its affiliated research organizations! 🌟 The theme for this year's competition was particularly relevant and timely-’Security in AI’. Competing on such a significant platform and earning recognition at this level is genuinely an extraordinary accomplishment, and I couldn't be happier about it. It was a Friday evening and I had just reached my research lab to attend the orientation session for the competition. The real journey started when Tin, Yuchen, and I decided to come together, driven by a shared passion for AI-driven innovation, and particularly our enthusiasm for Generative AI (GenAI) applications and its role in security. Over the crucial short spanned weekend, we worked diligently, collaborating closely, brainstorming tirelessly, and overcoming numerous challenges along the way. The competition itself was not only a test of our technical abilities but also of our creativity, problem-solving skills, time management skills, and teamwork. Total of 36 teams from across the United States showcased impressive solutions, each addressing crucial aspects of how AI can strengthen and enhance homeland security. 💡 Our idea was to build a centralized AI chatbot system that can help the DHS employees to gather internal and operational information and share knowledge from across all Homeland Security departments. The approached system is mainly based on an Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) framework along with Large Language Model (LLM) that generates responses from DHS specific knowledge base. Over the weekend, we designed and developed a prototype of the chatbot application to present to the organizer’s panel. On Sunday evening, when the announcement came that our team had secured the third prize, the sense of achievement was just overwhelming. We realized how far we had come, not just in terms of winning but also in our growth as individuals and as a cohesive team. 💯 Working alongside Tin and Yuchen was truly a remarkable experience—their insights, dedication, and determination were instrumental in our success. This accomplishment has reinforced my belief in the power of collaboration and innovation. It's a reminder that meaningful achievements come through teamwork, perseverance, and a passion for making a difference. Looking ahead, I'm inspired more than ever to continue exploring and contributing to the exciting field of AI and Machine Learning. I'm grateful for taking the participation and my team for our tireless dedication. Here's to continued learning, growth, and making an impact through technology! Stay tuned to my portfolio website for more updates and details on our journey ahead.
