A Day to Remember: Graduating with the UB Class of 2025

May 17, 2025 🎓 — a date that's now etched into my heart forever. It was more than just a day of caps and gowns, more than the official end of my master's journey at the University at Buffalo. It was a full-circle moment, a culmination of years of dedication, late-night deadlines, deep conversations, quiet doubts, loud victories, and unwavering persistence. And now, just like that, I'm a proud graduate of the Class of 2025. ❤️ Looking back, the journey wasn't always easy. Grad school has a way of testing your limits — mentally, emotionally, and physically. From the nerve-wracking presentations to the thrill of solving complex problems, every step of this journey shaped me into someone more resilient, curious, and confident. UB wasn't just a place of academics; it was a place of growth and innovation. I met mentors who challenged me, peers who inspired me, and friends who stood by me. There were long nights in the library that faded into early morning bus rides back home. There were group projects that tested patience and collaborations that turned into lasting friendships. Every assignment, every coffee-fueled coding session, every small victory added up to this one, unforgettable day. The day arrived like a dream. The campus felt different — dressed in pride and joy. The usually quiet Alumni Arena building buzzed with excitement. Families from across the world gathered, friends embraced, faculty members smiled with pride. Everyone was glowing. We were glowing. Wearing my cap and gown, I felt a quiet sense of power — not just because of what I had achieved, but because of everything I had overcome to get there. The tassel, the stole, the hood — they weren't just pieces of clothing; they were symbols of the effort, the sacrifice, and the strength behind every step of the journey. As my name was called, I celebrated and walked across the stage, heart pounding, eyes scanning the crowd, smile uncontrollably wide. That moment even just a few seconds long was everything. 💯 The most overwhelming emotion I felt that day wasn't pride — it was gratitude. Gratitude for my professors, who taught me more than textbooks ever could. Gratitude for my friends and cohort, who made the grind feel lighter. Gratitude for my family, who supported me even when things didn't go as planned. And gratitude for myself — for showing up, again and again, no matter how hard the day was. This degree isn't just a line on my resume. It's a testament to a chapter of life lived fully and authentically. It's the reminder that dreams do materialize when met with action and heart. 🌎 Now, as I step into the next phase of my career and life, I carry forward not just the academic knowledge, but the values that UB instilled in me — curiosity, perseverance, humility, and a desire to make a difference. Let's celebrate not just the end, but the beginning. 🎉 Here's to bold dreams, bright futures, and beautiful beginnings.

Master's Thesis: A Journey of Growth and Innovation

Today, 2 May 2025, marked a defining moment in my life—I successfully defended my master's thesis and graduated from the University at Buffalo (UB) with a Master of Science in Industrial & Systems Engineering. 💯 This journey, full of challenges, insights, and transformations, has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. 🌟 I decided this thesis topic with a mission: to contribute meaningfully to society using my computer systems, data science and problem solving skills. And I leave with not just a diploma, but a body of work that reflects real-world application, innovation, and commitment to public safety. My research project, Patrolling Optimization for Enhanced Security in Schools (POESS), was inspired by a growing need to protect educational institutions against security threats in an unpredictable world. In this work, I leveraged ’Bayesian Stackelberg Games’, a branch of game theory, to model the interaction between security officers and potential adversaries. The idea was simple but powerful: design patrol routes that are strategically randomized, hard to predict, yet highly effective. Drawing inspiration from the PROTECT system used by the U.S. Coast Guard, I adapted these frameworks to school environments—factoring in real-time student movement data, campus layouts, and potential threat zones. This wasn't just a theoretical endeavor. It involved deep dives into simulation modeling, hours of algorithm optimization, and even developing a simulation web application to visualize the patrolling strategies. Seeing it all come together during my defense was nothing short of exhilarating. I would not be here without the incredible people who walked this path with me. My heartfelt thanks to my advisor, Dr. Jun Zhuang and mentors at UB, to the officers at the University Police who provided valuable perspectives, and to the brilliant minds at SENTRY (Soft Target Engineering to Neutralize the Threat Reality) and the Department of Homeland Security who offered critical support. A special shout-out to my family and friends who supported me through sleepless nights, endless debugging, and constant thesis edits. Your belief in me kept me going. I hope to continue working at the intersection of data, AI, machine learning, and public good. If my thesis taught me anything, it's that well-crafted strategies—when backed by data and purpose—can save lives. I'm excited to share more about my journey, the challenges I faced, and the lessons I learned along the way. Stay tuned for updates on my portfolio website, where I'll be posting more about my research, projects, and future endeavors in the field of data science and engineering.

Celebrating a National Achievement: DASSH AI 2025

I'm thrilled to share some exciting news: my team recently secured the third prize at a prestigious national competition - Designing Actionable Solutions for a Secure Homeland 2025 (DASSH) organized by the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS), along with its affiliated research organizations! 🌟 The theme for this year's competition was particularly relevant and timely-’Security in AI’. Competing on such a significant platform and earning recognition at this level is genuinely an extraordinary accomplishment, and I couldn't be happier about it. It was a Friday evening and I had just reached my research lab to attend the orientation session for the competition. The real journey started when Tin, Yuchen, and I decided to come together, driven by a shared passion for AI-driven innovation, and particularly our enthusiasm for Generative AI (GenAI) applications and its role in security. Over the crucial short spanned weekend, we worked diligently, collaborating closely, brainstorming tirelessly, and overcoming numerous challenges along the way. The competition itself was not only a test of our technical abilities but also of our creativity, problem-solving skills, time management skills, and teamwork. Total of 36 teams from across the United States showcased impressive solutions, each addressing crucial aspects of how AI can strengthen and enhance homeland security. 💡 Our idea was to build a centralized AI chatbot system that can help the DHS employees to gather internal and operational information and share knowledge from across all Homeland Security departments. The approached system is mainly based on an Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) framework along with Large Language Model (LLM) that generates responses from DHS specific knowledge base. Over the weekend, we designed and developed a prototype of the chatbot application to present to the organizer’s panel. On Sunday evening, when the announcement came that our team had secured the third prize, the sense of achievement was just overwhelming. We realized how far we had come, not just in terms of winning but also in our growth as individuals and as a cohesive team. 💯 Working alongside Tin and Yuchen was truly a remarkable experience—their insights, dedication, and determination were instrumental in our success. This accomplishment has reinforced my belief in the power of collaboration and innovation. It's a reminder that meaningful achievements come through teamwork, perseverance, and a passion for making a difference. Looking ahead, I'm inspired more than ever to continue exploring and contributing to the exciting field of AI and Machine Learning. I'm grateful for taking the participation and my team for our tireless dedication. Here's to continued learning, growth, and making an impact through technology! Stay tuned to my portfolio website for more updates and details on our journey ahead.
